Past Masters of the Lodge
Over the many years of our history, some distinguished men and masons have served as Master of our Lodge. To choose a man to be their Worshipful Master is the greatest honour that the Lodge can bestow upon him. All those shown below have served with great diligence and distinction, and we proudly record their names for posterity. The list shows our historic Masters from our consecration in 1899 up to 2007. We have of course continued to appoint a Master annually since then, as well.

About our Past Masters
Many of our Past Masters began their Masonic journey in the Apollo University Lodge, at Oxford University; this is true of members from our foundation, through to the present day, and is our most enduring link.
We have counted a very large number of Army officers amongst our Past Masters, with occasional representation by the other armed services too, including a distinguished Royal Navy ship's Captain, and an RAF Air Vice-Marshal.
There are quite a few senior Freemasons on the list - the very first (ever) Assistant Grand Master of England, several Grand Wardens of the Grand Lodge, an Assistant Grand Master of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London, members of the Supreme Council (including a Sovereign Grand Commander), a Deputy Grand Superintendent of London's Holy Royal Arch, and multiple Provincial Grand Masters, in the Craft and other Orders.
We have a good number from the classical (clerical, medical, & legal) professions - lawyers, doctors, and clergymen.
The clerics range from 1932's Master, through to more recent times. In the twelve years from 1994 to 2005 we had a clergyman as Master for 50% of the time - five different priests, serving together for six years - one a Bishop of the Liberal Catholic Church, another a Canon of Norwich Cathedral. Four of those five Clerics worked in East Anglia, and came (in one way or another) under the influence of Bishop John Dennis (Bishop of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich from 1986 to 1996) who was not a member of our Lodge, but was a Freemason, and a member of Rutlish Lodge No 4416.
There have been quite a few Knights of the Realm over the years, and no fewer than three Lord Mayors of London.
Past Masters of this Lodge were awarded gallantry medals (including the prestigious Military Cross) in the First World War, the Second World War, and the Falklands War of 1982.
Our Past Masters include at least two personal ADCs to members of the British Royal Family, as well as an innumerable body who have given service to the Crown in assorted other ways, including through Government or the Armed Forces.
Finally, our Lodge has had a number of Peers of the Realm amongst its members, but only one has been Worshipful Master - the 5th Viscount Gough, who was Master on no fewer than three occasions during his magnificent membership of almost 55 years. He was a dedicated and beloved member of our lodge, and we were greatly diminished by his death in 2023.
We believe our Past Masters, like our members, represent a broad spectrum of London Society, and we are proud that for over 120 years we have been a meeting place for such diverse and interesting characters, meeting together in such blissful harmony and common purpose.
